Europe and Schengen visitor visas
Last reviewed 5 September 2026
The Schengen zone is a travel zone of European countries that share a common short-stay visa policy - it is a region, not a single country. A short-stay Schengen visa (up to 90 days in any 180-day period) is applied for at the embassy or consulate of the main destination country, or the first country of entry. Each participating country still runs its own visa application process, embassy network and appointment system.

Costs and processing times
Government fees, funds requirements and processing times change periodically and vary by individual case. Always confirm the current figures at the official source linked below before making decisions or payments.
Rights and restrictions
A short-stay Schengen visa does not permit employment. Rules can differ slightly by member state, so always confirm with the embassy or consulate handling your specific application.
