United States student visas
Last reviewed 5 September 2026
The F-1 student visa is for academic study at a SEVP-certified institution. Applicants need a Form I-20 from their school, must pay the SEVIS fee, and must demonstrate nonimmigrant intent alongside financial capacity at a consular interview.

Work and post-study rights
F-1 students generally cannot work off-campus in their first academic year and face strict limits afterwards (e.g. CPT/OPT authorisation). Confirm current rules with your Designated School Official and the official government source before assuming any work rights.
